Freelance writing: Explainers, interviews and list articles for Popverse

In May 2022, ReedPop launched Popverse – a pop culture-oriented website headed up by editor-in-chief Chris Arrant and deputy editor Tiffany Babb. Backed by ReedPop’s convention circuit connections and cash flow (not to mention a well-implemented subscription model), Chris, Tiffany, and their small team of regular contributors quickly established Popverse as a site dedicated to substantive comics, film, and TV coverage. Naturally, I wanted to work with them – and in January 2023, my wish came true.

Popverse approved three of my pitches that month, for articles timed to coincide with the release of John Wick: Chapter 4. Two of the articles have now been published (with the third to follow soon):

  • An explainer article covering where and how to watch every John Wick instalment released to date. This article also outlines several ways to experience the franchise’s overarching narrative, including a chronological watch order incorporating upcoming spinoffs Ballerina and The Continental. It was published on 20 March 2023.

  • A list article targeted at John Wick fans looking for movies, TV shows, and comics that offer a similar vibe to their favourite action-thriller franchise. It was published on 23 March 2023.

Since then, I’ve penned additional articles for Popverse, including:

  • An interview with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom voice actor Patricia Summersett. In the interview, Patricia reflects on how her portrayal of Princess Zelda has changed between Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, unpacks the dynamic between Zelda and franchise protagonist Link, and weighs in on whether Nintendo should consider adapting the pair’s story as a movie. It was published on 12 May 2023.
