Soapbox: Star Wars – 15 Times The Jedi And Sith Forgot How To Use Their Powers

Jedi-Sith-Force-Powers
That moment when you realise you’ve forgotten how your Force powers work…

Within the Star Wars universe, the Jedi Knights and Sith Lords are renowned thanks to the awesome powers granted to them by their mastery of the Force. With the Force as their ally, a fully trained member of either order can move faster, jump higher, and just generally fight better than a non-Force sensitive individual. They also boast a myriad of even more fantastical abilities, ranging from telekinesis to precognition and other extrasensory gifts.

As such, both Jedi and Sith combatants are theoretically unstoppable – except when they forget how to use their powers! If that sounds unlikely (or even a little silly), it shouldn’t. Over the course of all the Star Wars films released to date, numerous servants of the light and dark sides of the Force – including several very prominent ones – have lost because they neglected to effectively use the amazing abilities at their disposal.

There’s a real-world reason for this, of course: it’s just not that exciting to watch unbeatable characters, so the filmmakers occasionally resort to afflicting Force users with temporary amnesia. But let’s be honest – half the time, audiences are so enthralled by these adventures in a galaxy far, far away, they don’t even notice.

Here are 15 Times The Jedi And Sith Forgot How To Use Their Powers.

Soapbox: 9 Canceled Sequels That Would’ve Been Terrible (And 6 That Would’ve Been Great)

Unmade-Sequels-Header
Two very different types of tough guy, who nearly starred in two very different types of sequel!

Movie history is filled with examples of high-profile projects that never made it to the big screen – including unmade sequels to your some of your favorite films. Unfortunately, while getting a sequel off the ground for a critically acclaimed outing or blockbuster hit seems like it would be a no-brainer, thanks to the many logistical and political forces at play in Hollywood, that’s not true.

Although this has cost audiences the opportunity to enjoy promising follow-up entries to a number of popular franchises, it’s also spared them from pretty severe disappointment, too. For every brilliantly conceived sequel that fails to materialize, an even greater number are pitched that are at best ill-advised and at worst flat-out unnecessary. Indeed, several of these dubious continuations wouldn’t have merely been destined to fall flat at the box office – they risked damaging the legacy of the beloved movies that came before them.

Still, there’s something inherently fascinating about these unseen films – whether they looked set to be a masterpiece or a trainwreck – that comes from wondering what might have been. With this in mind, we’ve taken stock of the biggest unmade sequels out there, pulling together this list of 9 Canceled Sequels That Would’ve Been Terrible (And 6 That Would’ve Been Great).

Soapbox: 10 Incredible Movie Cliffhangers (And 5 That Are Absolutely TERRIBLE)

The-Empire-Strikes-Back
“Bring Your Kid To Work Day” had taken a real turn for the worst…

Cliffhanger endings have been keeping movie audiences on the edge of their seats since virtually the dawn of cinema. Not to be confused with stand alone films containing ambiguous, “open” endings, this storytelling device sees films draw to a close without a true resolution, but rather with the promise of more events to come.

First popularized in serials of the 1920s and 1930s – famous for the “To be continued” text that rounded each instalment – cliffhangers have long proven divisive among cinemagoers. After all, by their nature, cliffhanger endings typically prevent a film from having a truly satisfying conclusion.

How can they, when they’re designed to build anticipation for a follow-up movie containing the story’s actual finale? Even so, when done well, cliffhangers can be a thrilling way to wrap up a film, dramatically raising the stakes even as they surprise viewers with shocking revelations and happenings.

Of course, when they go wrong, cliffhangers can add an extra note of frustration to an already vexing theatrical outing – especially when they tease a sequel that never materializes!

As cinema history is filled to the brim with famous – and infamous! – cliffhanger endings, we’ve pulled together this list of 10 Amazing Movie Cliffhangers (And 5 That Are Terrible) for your reading pleasure.

Soapbox: Star Wars – 15 Deleted Scenes That Should Never Have Been Cut

Fortunately, everything the filmmakers left in was pretty good, too

Every great movie franchise – from James Bond to Harry Potter – has its fair share of amazing deleted scenes, and Star Wars is no different. Ever since the first film was released way back in 1977, awesome footage of our favorite galaxy far, far away has ended up on the cutting room floor!

Of course, the filmmakers almost always had very good reasons for trimming these moments from their respective Star Wars episodes. More often than not, the rationale behind these cuts was two-fold – to improve the plot’s pacing, as well as to streamline the narrative.

Whilst we can all agree that a briskly-paced, tightly-focused Star Wars movie is ideal, there’s a few instances where it seems that the editor’s scissors were used a bit too judiciously. The end result is scenes being omitted that should arguably have been left in the final cut.

Over the years, Lucasfilm has shared a hefty chunk of these rejected sequences, leading fans to speculate over whether or not they deserved to wind up on the trash heap.

With this in mind, we’ve sifted through all the available unused Star Wars footage, in order to pull together this list of 15 Star Wars Deleted Scenes That Should Have Been Included in the finished films!

Crystal Ball: Visions Of The Force – The Five Biggest Things We Learned From The Star Wars: The Last Jedi Teaser

So the plan this month really wasn’t to feature TWO Star Wars posts (let alone two virtually back to back).

But, as I lack Jedi clairvoyance, I wasn’t able to foresee the arrival of the Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi teaser trailer earlier this week, and thus realise that my intended next post would soon be headed the way of the Death Star.

Still, what you lose in variety, we all gain in excitement – because The Last Jedi teaser is exciting. VERY exciting.

This first sneak peek at director Rian Johnson’s new adventure offers fleeting, tantalising glimpses of Leia, Finn, the Millennium Falcon and at least one breathtakingly epic space battle, all of which are enough to give fans genuine goosebumps of anticipation.

Even so, these brief moments – whilst undeniably cool – are virtually nothing compared to what else is on show, which is why I’ve pulled together this rundown of the biggest talking points across the galaxy (or at least, the internet) surrounding the teaser, and what they might mean when The Last Jedi hits cinemas this December!

This would have looked soooo much less impressive if he’d used an iPhone…

Romance is a tricky thing to get right, not just in real life, but in the movies, too.

As in real life, when it comes to romantic moments on film – whether it’s a sweeping gesture, an emotional speech or something in-between – those that truly stand-out do so because of the genuine connection we as an audience feel between the loved-up couple on screen.

With that in mind – and in honour of Valentine’s Day today – the following list provides a rundown of the 10 big screen romantic moments where just such a connection takes place, and which are guaranteed to set your heart aflutter!

Soapbox: Action Words, Plot Hints And Cheese – Ranking The Star Wars Episode Titles From Best To Worst

Have three little words ever caused such Internet frenzy?

It’s no secret that I spend a lot of time thinking about movie titles. It’s also no secret that I spend a lot of time thinking about Star Wars.

So it’s not going to come as much of a shock when I say that after the recent announcement that Star Wars – Episode VIII is called The Last Jedi, I found myself spending a frankly embarrassing amount of time considering what makes a good Star Wars title, and that before too long, I had ranked all eight episode titles from best to worst.
